Why ChatGPT Doesn't Mention Your Company: 7 Technical Causes

By the GEOmonitorai team ·

When ChatGPT lists three of your competitors and not you, the reason is often simpler than "the AI prefers them". Before AI can recommend a company, it has to reach the company's website, read it, and understand what the company sells. This article covers seven technical problems that break that chain on B2B websites, and how to check each one in your server logs.

First, how ChatGPT finds suppliers

ChatGPT can answer from what its model already learned, and from pages it looks up when answering. For current supplier questions, ChatGPT search relies on pages found by OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. When a user's question needs a specific page, ChatGPT fetches it with ChatGPT-User. See What Is GPTBot? for how these agents differ.

So the first question is not "Is our content good?" but "Has ChatGPT been able to read it?"

1. Your robots.txt blocks AI search

A single rule can do it. The most common cases:

  • Disallow: / under User-agent: *, left over from a staging site
  • a "block all AI" rule copied from a publisher's template, which also blocks OAI-SearchBot

Check: open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for any group that covers OAI-SearchBot. robots.txt for AI Crawlers shows safe setups.

2. Your firewall answers AI crawlers with 403

This is the cause we find most often. robots.txt says "allow", but a security plugin, hosting firewall or CDN bot protection refuses the request.

Check: in your access log, look at the status codes for AI agents. A large share of 403 or 429 responses means something is blocking them:

grep -E "OAI-SearchBot|ChatGPT-User|GPTBot" access.log | awk '{print $9}' | sort | uniq -c

3. Key product pages are never crawled

AI crawlers discover pages through links and sitemaps, just like search engines. Product pages that are only reachable through a filter, a search box or a JavaScript menu may never be found.

Check: list the paths AI crawlers request and compare them with your most important product pages. If a page has never been requested, AI can only know about it from other sources.

4. Your product details load with JavaScript

Some websites send an almost empty HTML page and build the content in the browser. Crawlers that don't run JavaScript, or run it only partly, may see a page with a title and nothing else.

Check: view your product page source (right-click → View Page Source) and search for a specification you know is on the page. If it isn't in the source, a crawler may not see it either.

5. Specifications live in PDFs and images

Datasheets uploaded as scanned PDFs, specification tables saved as images, and certificates shown only as photos are hard for any crawler to read reliably.

Fix: put the key facts on the page as text: model numbers, capacity ranges, standards, certifications, markets served. Keep the PDF as a download.

6. Your pages don't say clearly who you are

AI answers to "Who makes X?" need clear facts: company name, what you make, where you are, which standards you meet, which markets you serve. Many B2B sites spread this across vague slogans.

Fix: state the basics in plain sentences on the homepage, About page and product pages. Add structured data such as Organization and Product so machines can read the same facts.

7. The wrong pages get the crawler's attention

Crawlers spend limited time on each site. If most of their requests go to tag archives, old URLs that return 404, or endless parameter pages, your important pages get fewer visits.

Check: look at the paths AI crawlers request most often. If the top of the list isn't your product and category pages, fix redirects, remove dead links and keep the sitemap clean.

Putting it together

These checks don't guarantee a mention. ChatGPT also weighs what other sites say about you, and its answers vary by user and time. But they remove the reasons AI can't recommend you, which is the part you control.

A practical order of work:

  1. Fix blocks first: robots.txt (1) and firewall (2).
  2. Make sure key pages are reachable and readable (3, 4, 5).
  3. Then improve clarity and focus (6, 7).
  4. Re-test with real buyer questions after a few weeks.

FAQ

Can I ask ChatGPT to add my company?

There is no submission form for ChatGPT answers. What you can do is make sure OpenAI's crawlers can reach and read your site, and that other trustworthy sites describe your company accurately.

My competitors are mentioned but I'm not. Is it always technical?

Not always. AI answers also reflect how often and how clearly a company is described across the web. Technical problems are worth checking first because they are common and fixable.

How long after a fix will ChatGPT mention us?

There is no fixed timeline. Crawler access changes show up in server logs within days or weeks. Changes in answers are slower, so re-test monthly with the same questions.

Does this apply to Claude, Perplexity and Gemini too?

Yes. Each has its own crawlers, but the same seven problems block them. Our AI crawler directory lists the agent names for each platform.
