GEO vs SEO for Manufacturers: What Changes and What Doesn't
GEO, generative engine optimization, is not a replacement for SEO. For manufacturers, most of the work is the same: a crawlable website with clear, specific product pages. What changes is how success is measured, which crawlers you have to watch, and how much the clarity of your facts matters. This guide separates what stays from what's new.
Two kinds of answer
When a buyer searches Google for "industrial screw compressor manufacturer", they get a list of links and choose which to open. SEO is about getting into that list and earning the click.
When the same buyer asks an AI assistant, they often get a short answer that names a few suppliers and summarizes them. GEO is about being one of the names, and being described correctly.
What stays the same
Most of the foundations carry over directly:
- Crawlable pages. If a crawler can't reach a page, neither Google nor AI can use it.
- Clear site structure. Logical categories, internal links and an accurate sitemap.
- Specific content. Model numbers, capacities, standards and applications beat generic marketing copy.
- Technical health. Fast pages, few broken links, correct redirects.
- Reputation. What industry sites, directories and customers say about you.
If your SEO basics are weak, fix them first. They are the base GEO stands on.
What changes
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in results, win the click | Be named and described correctly in answers |
| Crawlers to watch | Googlebot, Bingbot | Plus OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and others |
| Main measure | Rankings, clicks, traffic | Mentions, accuracy, cited sources, AI referrals |
| Unit of value | A page | A fact the AI can quote |
| Where problems hide | Search Console reports | Server logs and AI answers |
More crawlers to look after
Each AI platform has its own crawlers, and many websites block them by accident through robots.txt or firewall rules. Google Search Console won't show you this. See the AI crawler directory for the names.
Facts matter more than keywords
AI answers extract and combine facts. A page that clearly states "200-ton four-column hydraulic press, CE certified, exported to 40 countries" gives an AI something to quote. A page that says "industry-leading solutions for your pressing needs" doesn't.
Measurement is harder
There is no single ranking position in AI answers. They vary by user, wording and time. You measure with repeated tests of real buyer questions, plus server logs that show whether AI crawlers reach your pages. What Is an AI Visibility Tool? covers the metrics.
What manufacturers should add first
- Check AI crawler access. Make sure robots.txt and your firewall let AI search crawlers in. Is Your Firewall Blocking AI Search? shows how.
- Turn key facts into text. Specifications, certifications and markets served should be on the page, not only in PDFs or images.
- Answer buyers' real questions. Add FAQ sections to product pages: lead times, minimum orders, standards, customization, after-sales support.
- Add structured data.
Organization,ProductandFAQPagemarkup states your facts in a format machines read reliably. - Be consistent everywhere. Use the same company name, product names and key facts on your site, directories and trade platforms.
- Test and repeat. Pick ten buyer questions, test them in major AI assistants every month, and compare results with your crawler data.
What not to do
- Don't publish masses of thin AI-written pages. They dilute your site and rarely contain the specific facts AI answers need.
- Don't block AI crawlers by default just because publishers do. A manufacturer's pages exist to be found. Should You Block AI Crawlers? explains the trade-offs.
- Don't drop SEO. Google search still drives a large share of B2B research, and good SEO supports good GEO.
FAQ
Is GEO just a new name for SEO?
Not quite. It shares the foundations but adds new crawlers to manage, a stronger focus on quotable facts, and different ways to measure results.
Do I need separate content for GEO and SEO?
Usually not. Clear, specific, well-structured pages serve both. The main additions are FAQ content, structured data and checks on AI crawler access.
Which AI assistants matter most for B2B exporters?
It depends on your markets. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features are widely used by international buyers. Test the ones your customers actually use.
How do I know if GEO work is paying off?
Track three things over months: AI crawler access to your key pages, how often you're mentioned in tests of real buyer questions, and visits that arrive from AI assistants.
