How to Track Traffic from ChatGPT and Other AI Assistants

By the GEOmonitorai team ·

When a buyer clicks a link in ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude and lands on your website, that visit can now be measured. Google Analytics 4 has a built-in AI Assistant channel, and ChatGPT adds a tracking parameter to its links. This guide shows where to find these visits, how to catch the ones GA4 misses, and why referral traffic is only half of what AI search does to a B2B website.

Two kinds of AI activity on your website

AI assistants touch your website in two different ways, and each one shows up in a different place.

Activity Who makes the request Where you can see it
AI crawling A bot such as OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot reads your pages Server or CDN logs only
AI referrals A person clicks a link inside an AI answer and visits your site Web analytics (GA4, Umami and others) and server logs

Crawling comes first. An AI assistant can only link to pages it has read. Referrals come later, when a buyer is interested enough to click. Most analytics setups only measure the second one, which is why a website can look "invisible to AI" in GA4 while AI bots read it every day. Our guide on checking which AI crawlers visit your website covers the first half. This article covers the second.

The AI Assistant channel in GA4

[Documented] Google Analytics added "AI Assistant" to its default channel group in May 2026. Google's traffic-source dimensions page describes it as the channel by which users arrive from sources like ChatGPT and Gemini, and also lists Deepseek, Copilot and Grok. When a referrer matches Google's list of AI assistants, GA4 sets the medium to ai-assistant and the campaign to (ai-assistant).

To see it:

  1. Open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
  2. Keep the primary dimension as Session default channel group.
  3. Look for the AI Assistant row. Change the dimension to Session source to see which assistant sent each visit.

You don't need to set anything up. Two details matter when you read the numbers:

  • [Documented] Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are not in this channel. Google counts them as Organic Search.
  • [Documented] Google has not published its full list of recognized assistants. A smaller assistant may still appear as Referral.

ChatGPT's utm_source=chatgpt.com tag

[Documented] OpenAI's publishers and developers FAQ says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs from ChatGPT search results.

This helps in two ways. Most analytics tools read the UTM tag even when the browser sends no referrer, so the visit is still credited to ChatGPT. And you can find these visits in your own server logs by searching for the tag:

grep "utm_source=chatgpt.com" /var/log/nginx/access.log | wc -l

If your CRM or form tool captures the landing page URL, the same tag tells your sales team that an enquiry started in ChatGPT.

Older GA4 properties: a custom channel group

If the AI Assistant channel hasn't appeared in your property yet, or you want to add assistants Google doesn't recognize, create your own channel:

  1. Go to Admin → Data display → Channel groups and copy the default group.
  2. Add a new channel named AI assistants.
  3. Set the condition Source matches regex with a pattern such as:
.*(chatgpt\.com|openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|chat\.deepseek\.com|grok\.com|you\.com).*
  1. Drag the new channel above Referral. GA4 assigns each session to the first channel that matches, so a channel below Referral never receives traffic.
  2. Save, and select the new group in your acquisition reports.

Check your own Referral report for other AI domains every few months and add them to the pattern.

What analytics still misses

AI referrals in analytics are useful, but they undercount what AI search does for a B2B company. Four gaps are worth knowing:

  • Visits without a referrer. [Documented] Detection depends on the referrer. Clicks from some mobile apps and in-app browsers, and links a buyer copies and pastes, arrive with no referrer and are counted as Direct. The ChatGPT UTM tag helps here; most other assistants don't add one.
  • Answers without a click. [Analysis] A buyer may read your company name in an AI answer, then search for it on Google or type your domain later. That visit counts as Organic Search or Direct, not AI.
  • Visitors who block scripts. Ad blockers and privacy settings stop analytics scripts from loading. Server logs still record the request.
  • The cause. Analytics shows that a visit came from ChatGPT. It doesn't show whether ChatGPT's crawler could read your product pages in the first place, or whether a firewall blocked it. That information is only in your logs. See Is your firewall blocking AI search?

[Analysis] For an industrial B2B website, AI referral numbers are usually small: dozens of visits a month, not thousands. Judge them by quality. Check which pages they land on, how long they stay and whether they send enquiries, not raw volume.

A simple monthly routine

  1. Record AI Assistant sessions and the top sources in GA4.
  2. Note the landing pages. Product and application pages are a good sign; a buyer was sent to a specific answer.
  3. Check enquiries from those sessions, or landing URLs that contain utm_source=chatgpt.com.
  4. Compare with your crawler activity for the same month: which AI bots visited, and which key pages they read or missed.
  5. Ask a few real buyer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and save the answers with the date. Our guide on why ChatGPT doesn't mention your company lists what to check when you're missing.

GEOmonitorai puts steps 1 and 4 in one dashboard: AI referral visits from the tracking script, and AI crawler activity from your server logs. See what an AI visibility tool measures.

FAQ

Does GA4 track ChatGPT traffic automatically?

Yes, in most properties. Visits that GA4 recognizes as coming from ChatGPT and other major assistants appear in the AI Assistant channel without any setup. Visits that arrive without a referrer or UTM tag are still counted as Direct.

Are Google AI Overviews counted as AI Assistant traffic?

No. According to Google's documentation, clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted as Organic Search.

Why does ChatGPT traffic appear as Direct?

Some ChatGPT clicks, especially from mobile apps or copied links, reach your site without a referrer. Visits that carry the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag can still be attributed correctly.

Can I see which AI crawlers read my pages in GA4?

No. Crawlers don't run JavaScript, so analytics tools never see them. Crawler visits are only recorded in your server or CDN logs.
